'Suficientemente fiel à memória da emoção' é a tradução portuguesa de uma frase de Hervé Guibert que serve de ponto de partida a esta exposição – e que lhe dá nome. Entre a memória e a representação há o meio e um meio, e este não preserva características absolutas de nenhuma das extremidades. Interessa pensar a capacidade das imagens e das formas artísticas para fazer sobreviver uma experiência para lá daquilo que a originou. Não se trata de recuperar uma história, reconhecer uma intenção ou encontrar um referente, mas de pensar aquilo que subsiste quando estes deixam de ser necessários: um fantasma.
'Faithful Enough to the Memory of Emotion' is the Portuguese translation of a phrase by Hervé Guibert (here translated into English from the Portuguese, preserving its meaning rather than reproducing the exact wording of the English translation of the book). It serves as the starting point for this exhibition — and gives it its title. Between memory and representation lies the middle, and a medium, which preserves none of the absolute characteristics of either end. What matters here is the capacity of images and artistic forms to allow an experience to survive beyond what originally gave rise to it. This is not about recovering a story, recognising an intention or finding a referent, but rather considering what remains when these are no longer necessary: a ghost.
